We are breaking new ground again, with the first in a unique series of books, which will cover some of the thousands of aircraft diversions into Manchester.

The dictionary definition of 'diversion', describes it 'the action of something aside from its course'. This book give a photographic account of some of those aircraft failing their intended destinations, mainly due to bad weather.

The sight of an unusual aircraft or unexpected arrival at Manchester, or any airport, would create a tremendous buzz of excitement, often transforming a winter's afternoon into a hive of activity amongst the spectators and enthusiasts.

It should never be forgotten however, that these diversions were an inconvenience for the flight crew, frustrating and unwelcome for passengers and very challenging for the airport's ground staff. Even in 2014, bad weather such as snow and ice can still cause disruption, but with the advent of modern technology, flight diversions due to fog are now mainly confined to history!

This publication captures numerous aircraft and airlines not generally seen at Manchester. Featured are more than 330 exclusive black & white and colour photographs by various contributors, included renowned aviation photographer Geoff Ball.

Written and researched by Mark Williams.

Paperback 15cm x 21cm, 192 pages. ISBN NO: 9780957082663.

SIXTIES RINGWAY continues our highly successful 'RINGWAY THROUGH THE DECADES' series. This fourth publication charts the progress of Ringway airport from nothing more than a regional airport at the start of the decade. It was dominated by BEA who were operating a number of domestic and fledgling European routes and the sporadic of transatlantic services by the other UK flag-carrier BOAC. But it was left to the Belgian national airline to fly the flag and truly launch Manchester as an international gateway. Sabena had been operating flights to Canada and the USA from Ringway since the mid-1950s, but in April 1960 they brought the airport into the jet age, with the launch of a Boeing 707 service to New York.

By the end of the decade, the airport could boast links with Canada, USA, South America, most major European cities, and connections worldwide. There was also a blueprint for further expansion, include a multi-storey car park, an extended terminal and a third international pier. It could also boast a flourishing light aviation centre with a growing number of residents and executive visitors and an airline, BEA, which put its faith in Manchester by basing its brand new fleet of eighteen Super 1-11s.

Accompanying this in-depth publication are more than 230 original black & white and colour photographs, primarily by renowned aviation photographer Geoff Ball.

SEVENTIES RINGWAY launches this groundbreaking series, which will tell the story of Manchester Airport as it brings together for the very first time, official records from various sources, some of which were at the point of deterioration and could have been lost forever; together with the writers own records, logs and personal diaries.
